Edo Assembly Workers Protest Against Financial Autonomy Repeal

On Wednesday, workers of the Edo State House of Assembly protested against an alleged plan by the new leadership to repeal the financial autonomy law that was enacted during the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. The workers expressed concerns that repealing the law would result in reduced salaries and potential job losses.

Their protest was prompted by rumors that the new Majority Leader, Sunday Ojezele, was scheduled to present a motion for the repeal during the plenary session. To prevent any disruption, security personnel were deployed to the Assembly complex.

The leadership of the Edo State chapter of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), led by Farouk Haruna, chose not to comment on the situation. When approached for comments, the new Speaker, Yekini Idiaye, stated that the lawmakers had been in an executive session and claimed he was unaware of any protest or plans to repeal the financial autonomy law.
