Edo Governor Signs Controversial Autonomy Bills into Law

On Monday, Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo of Edo State signed into law the Edo House of Assembly Funds Management Bill 2023 and the State Judiciary Financial Autonomy 2023 Amendment Bill. This action occurred amid protests from members of the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), who blocked the entrance to the Edo State House of Assembly in Benin, demanding the cessation of alterations to the financial autonomy of the legislature and judiciary.

During the signing ceremony at Government House, Okpebholo stated that the legislation was essential to prevent the abuse of capital funds and ensure government resources benefit the people. He emphasized the distinct roles of the executive, legislature, and judiciary, warning against interference.

Speaker Prince Yekini Idiaye clarified that the new legislation does not abolish financial autonomy but aims to manage capital funds more effectively, requiring the Assembly and judiciary to submit proposals for executive approval before accessing capital project funds.
