Lawmaker Critiques BEDC for Unjust Electricity Charges

Barr. Chariti Aiguobarueghian, a minor leader in the Edo State House of Assembly representing Ovia North-East Constituency, has condemned the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) for what he describes as unjust charges imposed on communities for electricity projects.

During a visit from the Otuedo N’Ogbenb Benin Journalist Forum, he cited the Evbuomor Community, which has endured months of blackout due to a faulty transformer. Despite interventions to replace the transformer, BEDC allegedly refused to energize it unless the community paid between 3 million to 4 million naira.

Aiguobarueghian revealed that a newly installed transformer remained unused for an extended period, leaving residents without electricity despite available infrastructure. He warned that such practices deepen hardship among citizens and undermine the government's efforts to improve living conditions.

He called for urgent investigations into BEDC's operations to ensure accountability.
