Edo Retirees Demand Return to Old Pension Scheme

On August 18, 2026, hundreds of retirees from the Edo State Civil Service protested at the Edo State House of Assembly against their enrollment in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), which they described as retrogressive. The spokesperson, Mr. Andrew Asemota, who retired as a protocol officer at Grade Level 16, highlighted the financial struggles faced by retirees, with pensions as low as N7,000 to N10,000 monthly.

Asemota criticized the introduction of the CPS by Governor Godwin Obaseki, stating that many retirees were employed when Edo was still part of Bendel State and had not agreed to the scheme. He appealed to the House of Assembly to facilitate their transition back to the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).

Asemota noted that no law should be retroactive and emphasized that many retirees had dedicated decades of service before the CPS was enacted. He urged the Speaker to advocate for their removal from the CPS and return to the DBS.
