Oyo Pensioners Plan Protests Over Unmet Pension Increases

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State Council, criticized the management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education for not implementing pension increases mandated by Governor Seyi Makinde. The union announced plans to protest at both institutions starting August 18 if the directives are not followed.

Governor Makinde had approved a review of pensions in January 2025, which included a minimum monthly pension of N25,000 for the lowest-paid pensioners and various pension adjustments. Olusegun Abatan, the state Secretary of the union, stated that while many government agencies complied, these two institutions have delayed implementation despite multiple communications.

Abatan noted that these institutions had already implemented new minimum wage and welfare packages for serving workers, raising concerns about the differential treatment of pensioners. He emphasized that pension reviews should occur alongside salary increases as per constitutional provisions.
