Edo Speaker Launches Yam Farming for Vulnerable Groups

Bless Agbebaku, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, has commenced a yam farming initiative aimed at supporting widows, less privileged individuals, and vulnerable households in Owan West. The project was officially launched during the 2026 planting season, with Governor Mondai Okpebholo present to flag off the exercise.

Agbebaku emphasized the importance of agriculture in combating hunger and unemployment, encouraging youth involvement in farming as a sustainable path. The initiative targets the cultivation of improved yam seedlings, with a goal of harvesting several hundred tubers by the end of the year.

Notably, all harvested produce will be donated to widows and less privileged families who struggle to afford food in the current economic climate. Local community leaders have praised this initiative, which aims to reverse youth apathy towards agriculture and foster a commitment to food security.
