Suspected Vandal Electrocuted at BEDC Substation in Edo

On July 14, 2026, a suspected vandal was electrocuted at the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) injection substation in Benin City, Edo State, during an attempt to steal power cables. The incident occurred following a series of vandalism attempts, with BEDC spokesperson Evelyn Gbiwen stating that the company had received reports of the suspect returning to the facility to continue stealing cables.

The vandalism was noted to have caused significant damage to the electrical transmission and distribution networks. Gbiwen explained that the suspect mistakenly cut what was believed to be an earth cable, which was actually a neutral cable connected to a power transformer, triggering an electrical explosion.

BEDC's regional head of technical, Engr. Afebogb Oguezor, indicated that preliminary findings suggested the suspect gained access by scaling the perimeter fence despite security measures.

BEDC has called on residents living near substations to remain vigilant and help protect critical power infrastructure.
