Suspected Cable Thief Electrocuted in Edo Substation

A suspected power cable thief was electrocuted in Edo after allegedly attempting to steal power cables from a substation on a Monday night. Evelyn Gbiwen, the head of corporate communications for BEDC, reported that the deceased suspect mistakenly cut what he believed was an earth cable, which was actually a neutral cable connected to a transformer, triggering an electrical explosion.

Gbiwen stated that the company had received reports from the public about the suspect's vandalism activities. She urged the community to help protect critical power infrastructure, expressing concern over the increasing incidents of vandalism affecting BEDC's operations across Edo, Delta, Ondo, and Ekiti states.

The regional head of technical operations for the Benin South region, Engr. Afebogb Oguezor, indicated that preliminary findings suggested the suspect gained access to the substation despite existing security measures.
