EFCC Freezes Osun State Account Over Fund Mismanagement

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced the freezing of an Osun State Government bank account to prevent the alleged diversion of public funds currently under investigation. This action follows months of investigation initiated in March 2026 concerning the management of approximately N11 billion, which includes Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds, and allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

The EFCC stated that intelligence suggested funds linked to the investigation could be moved out of the account, necessitating the restriction to safeguard public money. The agency clarified that its actions were not politically motivated, despite the proximity to the August 15 governorship election.

Governor Ademola Adeleke accused the EFCC of attempting to disrupt his administration's activities and claimed the agency lacked the legal authority to freeze state government accounts. He argued that this move could hinder salary payments and essential public services.

The Osun Government, through Commissioner Kolapo Alimi, maintained that there was no legal justification for the EFCC's actions.
