EFCC Faces Hostility During Fraud Investigation Visit

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) explained its visit to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged multi-bank fraud case. The visit was initiated after the EFCC's Uyo zonal director sought to verify a medical report submitted by a suspect currently on trial before Justice M.

Onyettunu. The suspect is accused of defrauding several microfinance institutions, including the University of Uyo Microfinance Bank.

Despite earlier requests for verification sent to the hospital on March 11 and April 20, 2026, the EFCC received no response. During the visit, EFCC operatives encountered hostility from hospital staff, who allegedly pelted them with stones and other objects.

The hospital's Chief Medical Director reportedly ordered the gates shut to prevent the EFCC from conducting its inquiry. The EFCC stated that it acted professionally and did not disrupt hospital activities, despite the provocations, and warned that refusal to cooperate with investigations could lead to legal consequences.
