EFL Championship Play-offs Expand to Six Teams Next Season

The English Football League (EFL) has announced that the Championship play-offs will increase from four to six teams starting next season. This decision was made during a meeting of the EFL governing body and follows several months of discussions among club stakeholders.

EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch stated that this change will strengthen competition within the Championship and offer clubs a genuine opportunity to achieve promotion. Under the new system, teams finishing between fifth and eighth place will participate in elimination matches, with the winners facing the third and fourth place teams in two-legged semi-finals.

The final format will be agreed upon later this year. The current play-off format, which has been in place since the 1989-90 campaign, features a single-leg final at Wembley.

The financial implications of the play-offs are significant, as evidenced by Sunderland's victory over Sheffield United last season, which was estimated to be worth a minimum of £200 million ($267 million) in additional income.
