Ekiti Assembly Approves Bill for State Police Services

The Ekiti State House of Assembly passed the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, which proposes the establishment of State Police Services in Nigeria. The bill was approved during a sitting on Wednesday, with support from 21 members present.
Babatunde Oke, Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, announced that Speaker Adeoye Aribasoye directed the Clerk of the House to send the bill to the National Assembly, along with the Assembly's observations. Aribasoye highlighted the long-standing national discourse on state police and the necessity for effective and responsive security measures.
He noted that challenges in policing have led to public concerns regarding delayed responses and inadequate local policing, which threaten security and public trust. The committee recommended concurrence to the bill, subject to an amendment to Section 317A(5), after thorough clause-by-clause deliberation.
