Ekiti Voter Registration Hits 44%, Turnout Declines

As of June 20, 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reported that voter registration in Ekiti State has reached 1,059,360, representing a 44% increase since 2014. Despite this rise in registered voters, voter turnout has significantly decreased over three election cycles: from 50% in 2014 to 44% in 2018, and further down to 37% in 2022.

The number of accredited voters has also fallen, with 371,925 in 2014, 405,861 in 2018, and 363,438 in 2022. Factors contributing to this decline include voter apathy, unfulfilled promises, insecurity, and electoral malpractice.

Prof. Josh Amupitan, the INEC Chairman, assured stakeholders that technology would be deployed to ensure transparency in the upcoming elections and urged eligible voters to participate actively.

He also warned political parties against vote-buying, describing it as a threat to Nigeria's democracy.
