El-Rufai Sons Trade Public Blows Over Politics as Father Faces Detention

A family dispute within the El-Rufai household has spilled onto social media, with Bashir El-Rufai launching a public offensive against his brother Bello over diverging political paths. The confrontation surfaced on Saturday, August 29, through a series of posts on X platform containing strong language directed at Bello, who represents Kaduna North in the National Assembly.

The conflict centres on the brothers' contrasting responses to their father Nasir El-Rufai's political transition. The former Kaduna State governor departed the All Progressives Congress in March 2025 and joined the African Democratic Congress.

Bello remained with the APC until May 7, 2026, when he also switched to the ADC. Bashir's criticism suggests he views his brother's delayed defection as a betrayal of family interests for personal political gain.

Bashir has made clear his grievance extends beyond his brother. In separate statements, he indicated he harbours lasting resentment toward the APC, vowing he will not forgive the party for what he characterised as attacks on the family during a critical period.

He stated his intention to pursue political power specifically to confront those he holds accountable for harming the family. He added that this position would hold firm regardless of any eventual resolution of his father's current legal situation.

Nasir El-Rufai currently faces detention on corruption-related charges, a circumstance that appears to have intensified divisions within his immediate family. The public nature of Bashir's grievances—directed both at his brother and at the ruling party—represents an unusual display of internal family conflict among the political elite in Nigeria's northern region.
