El-Rufai Sues ICPC and Police for ₦1 Billion Over Search

Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, has initiated a ₦1 billion fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Nigeria Police Force. The suit, filed on February 20, 2023, in the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenges the legality of a search warrant issued by a Chief Magistrate's Court on February 4, which led to a search of El-Rufai's residence on February 19.

El-Rufai's lawyer, Iyamu, argues that the search warrant was invalid due to fundamental defects, including a lack of specificity regarding the items to be seized and typographical errors. The suit seeks seven reliefs, including a declaration that the search was unlawful and an injunction to prevent further actions based on the search.

El-Rufai claims the search violated his rights to dignity, liberty, fair hearing, and privacy as protected by the Nigerian Constitution.
