El-Rufai Remains in Custody Until June 2026 Amid Trial

Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, will remain in custody until June 2026 as his trial on corruption charges progresses. Justice Dariu Khobo adjourned the proceedings to the first week of June 2026, where arguments from counsel will be heard.

El-Rufai is facing nine counts of corruption, including allegations of fraud related to the release of N11 billion for a light rail project and mismanagement of a World Bank loan. His bail application was heard on April 14, 2026, but was denied by the court, which cited concerns that he might interfere with ongoing investigations.

The Federal High Court in Kaduna had previously granted bail in a separate corruption case, but El-Rufai remains in custody pending fulfillment of conditions. His defense counsel, Ubong Akpan, expressed dissatisfaction with the bail denial and indicated plans to challenge the decision through legal channels.

El-Rufai has denied all allegations against him.
