Okonkwo Urges Senate to Insist on E-Transmission for Electoral Integrity

Okonkwo, a lawyer, actor, and politician affiliated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called on the Nigerian Senate to cancel any election that does not involve electronic transmission of results. He stressed the need for mandatory electronic transmission at polling units to guarantee electoral integrity and prevent outcome manipulation.

Okonkwo's appeal comes amidst a nationwide backlash following the Senate's passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. The bill initially removed the real-time transmission clause, sparking outrage over perceived attempts to undermine electoral transparency.

Despite public pressure, the Senate later reversed its decision during an emergency session, approving electronic transmission without explicitly reinstating the real-time requirement. The bill now mandates electronic transmission but allows for manual form filling in case of internet connectivity issues.

Lawmakers are working to harmonize the Senate and House of Representatives versions of the bill to ensure credible elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
