Osuntokun Urges Nigerians to Hold INEC Accountable for 2027

Akin Osuntokun, a former presidential aide and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), called on Nigerians to demand accountability from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concerning the upcoming 2027 elections. His remarks were made on a Friday in Lagos State, in response to the recent signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 by President Bola Tinubu.

This amendment has sparked controversy, particularly due to the absence of provisions mandating the real-time electronic transmission of election results. Osuntokun emphasized the need for citizens to remain vigilant and insist on transparency from electoral authorities to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.

Additionally, political economist Prof. Pat Utomi criticized the rapid signing of the bill, noting that President Tinubu signed the 120-page legislation less than 24 hours after it was transmitted to him, raising concerns about the adequacy of review and consultation prior to the assent.
