Nigerian Senate Forms Committee to Review Electoral Act Amendments

The Nigerian Senate has established a seven-member ad hoc committee, led by Niyi Adegbonmire, to review and consolidate proposed amendments to the Electoral Act in preparation for the 2027 general elections. The committee, which includes notable figures like Adams Oshiomhole and Aminu Tambuwal, aims to enhance Nigeria's electoral framework.

The Senate, under the leadership of Godswill Akpabio, emphasized the importance of thorough deliberation to ensure a just electoral process. The proposed amendments seek to strengthen voter participation, combat electoral malpractice, and bolster the independence of the electoral commission.

The Senate has suspended debates to allow for further scrutiny of the bill's implications on Nigeria's electoral system. Opeyemi Bamidele highlighted key components of the amendments, such as stricter penalties for electoral offenses and the introduction of electronic voter identification.

The reforms aim to ensure transparency, security, and credibility in future elections.
