Nigerian Senate Appoints Committee to Review Electoral Act Amendments

The Nigerian Senate has constituted a seven-member ad hoc committee to harmonize proposed amendments to the Electoral Act, with notable figures like Adams Oshiomhole and Aminu Tambuwal included. The committee, led by Senator Godswill Akpabio, aims to strengthen Nigeria's electoral framework before the 2027 general elections.

The committee is mandated to synthesize lawmakers' views and address outstanding concerns in the bill. The Senate further scrutinized the Electoral Act repeal and reenactment bill during a closed-door session, emphasizing the need for a thorough examination to enhance transparency and boost public confidence in the electoral system.

The bill proposes stiffer sanctions for electoral offenses, including vote buying, with penalties such as a 5 million Naira fine, two years imprisonment, and a 10-year ban on contesting elections. The reforms also aim to expand voter participation, curb electoral malpractices, and ensure the credibility and security of elections.
