Protest Against Electronic Transmission at National Assembly

On a recent date, Oby Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education, alongside Solomon Dalung and Omoyele Sowore, protested at the National Assembly against legislative attempts to dilute provisions for electronic transmission of election results. Ezekwesili accused lawmakers, particularly the Senate, of introducing ambiguous language that would leave the matter of electronic transmission at the discretion of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

She argued that this could lead to manipulation and undermine public trust in the electoral process. Ezekwesili emphasized that making electronic transmission optional would weaken electoral transparency, a core principle of democracy.

Dalung and Sowore expressed their support for the demand for a compulsory electronic transmission system, insisting it is crucial for restoring confidence in Nigeria's electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections. The protest coincided with heightened political activity as lawmakers reconsider aspects of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2025, which aims to strengthen the legal framework for future elections.
