Emefiele Did Not Benefit from $6.2M Theft, EFCC Witness Says

On Thursday, Eloho Okpoziakpo, a witness for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), testified in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court that former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele did not benefit from the $6.2 million allegedly stolen from the bank. During cross-examination by Mathew Burka, Emefiele's lead counsel, Okpoziakpo admitted that there was no evidence linking Emefiele to the stolen funds, either through cash transfers or other means.

The EFCC is prosecuting Emefiele for alleged fraud and abuse of office. Okpoziakpo also stated that Emefiele never authorized the release of any funds and denied receiving any letters related to the alleged theft.

The trial is set to continue on July 3, 2023, with further investigations into the claims made by other witnesses, including allegations of forgery concerning signatures related to the case.
