Ex-Banker Testifies Against Emefiele in Fraud Case

Richard Agulu, a former employee of Zenith Bank, testified in the ongoing trial of Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, regarding allegations of a 7.8 billion naira fraud case. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Emefiele, who faces multiple charges including criminal breach of trust and conspiracy.

Agulu stated that he was instructed to handle large cash deposits for Emefiele's personal assistant, Eric Ochem, which were kept in the bank's vault. During cross-examination, Agulu maintained that all transactions followed normal banking procedures despite their unusual nature.

Emefiele, who was suspended from his position in June 2023, has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, which include allegations of receiving large sums of cash through companies like Ifeabigo Integrated Services and Kelvito Integrated Services. The trial is presided over by Justice Yusuf Halilu at the FCT High Court in Abuja.
