Emefiele Trial: Police Links $6.23M Withdrawal to Fraud

During the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele, a police witness, Eloho Edwin Okpoziakpo, testified in the Federal High Court in Abuja, linking Emefiele to a fraudulent withdrawal of $6.23 million. Emefiele faces 20 counts of charges, including criminal breach of trust, forgery, abuse of office, and conspiracy to obtain money under false pretenses, as per suit number FCT/HC/CR/577/2023.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The witness revealed that the funds were allegedly withdrawn under the pretext of being meant for international election observation for the 2023 general elections.

However, it was stated that the Federal Government's office denied making such a request. The trial is set to continue, with Justice Hamza Muazu adjourning the case until July 2, 2026.
