18 States Adopt Harmonised Tax Law to End Multiple Taxation

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State and Olusegun Adesokan, Executive Secretary of the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), announced that the era of multiple taxation in Nigeria is nearing an end as 18 states have adopted the harmonised tax law. This initiative aims to streamline tax administration by reducing the number of taxes from over 50 to just nine sub-heads, thereby alleviating the burden on low-income earners and micro businesses.
The announcement was made during the 160th meeting of the JRB in Kaduna, themed “One Year of Tax Reform: Assessing Progress and Addressing Challenges.” Adesokan emphasized that the reforms have abolished cash collection and roadblocks for revenue collection, aiming to simplify the tax system and eliminate unnecessary burdens. Sani noted that Nigeria's tax revenue has significantly increased, from approximately N10.1 trillion in 2023 to N21.6 trillion in 2024, with a reported N21.6 trillion generated in the first half of 2026, marking a 49% increase from the previous year.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for his decisive actions in reforming Nigeria's tax system.
