Enugu State Enforces N500,000 Fine for Traffic Violations

The Enugu State Government, led by Commissioner for Transport Obi Ozor, has initiated strict enforcement of a N500,000 fine for motorists who violate one-way traffic rules. This decision, announced in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday, is part of efforts to curb the increasing rate of road accidents and promote discipline among drivers.

Despite significant investments in road infrastructure, including the construction of dual carriageways and the installation of medians, violations persist, endangering lives. Ozor noted that offenders would undergo psychiatric evaluations to assess any underlying issues, such as substance abuse or mental health conditions, which could influence their driving behavior.

The government is committed to public safety and will conduct awareness campaigns in collaboration with transport unions and the media. The enforcement will include vehicle impoundment for continued violations, emphasizing that the policy is not aimed at generating revenue but rather at saving lives.
