EU Confirms Electoral Expert Mission for Nigeria's 2027 Polls

The European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has refuted claims that it rejected an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe Nigeria's 2027 general elections. In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, the EU clarified that it received a formal invitation from INEC dated April 17, 2026, and responded on July 28, 2026, accepting the invitation.

The EU will deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) consisting of two to four independent experts, who will be accredited as observers by INEC. The EU emphasized that the reasons attributed to it in various reports regarding insecurity and treatment of observers were not mentioned in its correspondence with INEC and were purely speculative.

The EEM will assess the electoral process's adherence to international and national democratic obligations and will provide a final report with recommendations for improving Nigeria's electoral framework. The EU also affirmed that this decision does not signify a withdrawal of support for Nigeria's democratic governance or electoral process.
