INEC Promises Credible 2027 Elections Reflecting Voter Will

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has committed to ensuring that the outcome of the 2027 general election reflects the sovereign will of Nigerian voters. This assurance was made by the Acting Chairman, Prof. Rhoda Gumus, during a meeting with a delegation from the African Union (AU), led by His Excellency Demeke Mekonnen, the Head of the AU Pre-Election Assessment Mission.

The AU mission, scheduled for September 13 to 19, 2026, aims to assess Nigeria's electoral preparations and identify gaps. Gumus noted that INEC is preparing for the elections on an unprecedented scale, with a voter population nearing 100 million and over 1.4 million personnel to be deployed.

She emphasized the importance of international support in addressing technological and logistical challenges. Gumus also mentioned ongoing collaborations with the National Identity Management Commission to clean the voter register and highlighted the need for AU support in areas such as digital training and inclusion for underrepresented groups.
