EU Confirms Observation Mission for Nigeria's 2027 Elections

The European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has refuted claims that it rejected an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe the 2027 general elections. EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, stated that the EU accepted INEC’s invitation, which was formally extended on April 17, 2026.

The EU responded on July 28, 2026, confirming the deployment of an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) consisting of two to four independent experts. The EEM will assess Nigeria's electoral process against international, regional, and national standards for democratic elections.

Mignot clarified that the decision not to deploy a larger observation mission was not due to security concerns or negative treatment of EU observers, as reported. The EU conducts annual reviews of electoral missions based on individual circumstances and resources.

The EEM's findings will be shared with the Nigerian government and may be made public. The EU's ongoing support for Nigeria's electoral process remains unaffected.
