EU Plans Major Visa Code Overhaul with New Fees

The European Union is planning a significant overhaul of its Visa Code, which governs Schengen short-stay visa applications and issuance. A formal legislative proposal is anticipated between January and March 2027, following a public consultation initiated by the European Commission on September 8, 2026.

This reform is part of a broader visa strategy announced in January 2026, focusing on digital procedures, improved data systems, and longer multiple-entry visas for specific travelers. A key aspect of the reform may include additional fees on top of the standard Schengen visa charge, currently set at €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to under 12, which were last adjusted on June 11, 2024.

The Commission aims to enhance its ability to respond to non-cooperative countries regarding the return of nationals and to streamline processes for verified travelers. The consultation is open to travelers and businesses, reflecting a growing demand for Schengen visas, with over 12 million applications received in 2025.
