European Commission Issues Schengen Visa Application Guide

The European Commission has published a comprehensive guide on applying for a Schengen visa, which allows non-EU citizens to stay in the Schengen area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The visa types include single-entry, multiple-entry, and airport transit visas.

Applicants must submit their applications at least 15 days before their intended travel date but no earlier than 6 months in advance. The application must be lodged at the consulate of the country the traveler plans to visit, or where they will spend the most time if visiting multiple countries.

Required documents include a valid passport, a completed visa application form, a passport photograph, travel insurance, and proof of accommodation and financial means. The standard application fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12, with reduced fees for citizens from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, and Cabo Verde.

Normal processing takes 15 days but may extend to 45 days if further examination is needed. Family members of EU or EEA citizens may qualify for a free and expedited process.
