Europe Faces Economic Crisis from Record Heatwaves

Europe is experiencing unprecedented heatwaves, leading to severe economic losses estimated in the hundreds of billions of euros. According to Sehrish Usman, an economist at the University of Mannheim, the year 2026 is particularly concerning due to simultaneous extreme weather events.

Record temperatures in June and July have disrupted shipping on the Rhine and Danube, forced nuclear reactors to reduce or halt production, and damaged agricultural output, contributing to over 10,000 deaths in Germany alone. Allianz estimates that a two-week heatwave in June could reduce Europe’s GDP by 0.3 percentage points, with similar impacts expected in Germany.

The economic consequences may worsen even after the extreme weather passes, particularly affecting Southern Europe through falling tourism and higher food prices. ING economist Carsten Brzeski noted that extreme heat could alter traditional holiday patterns.

Additionally, the fiscal burden from lost economic output may pressure government finances, potentially reducing annual tax revenue by up to 1.8% in France and 1.3% in Italy and Spain.
