Madison Sheahan Loses Ohio GOP Primary to Derek Merrin

Madison Sheahan, a former deputy director at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), was defeated in the Ohio 9th district Republican primary by Derek Merrin.

This election outcome, occurring in 2026, indicates a growing voter unease regarding immigration enforcement policies. Sheahan, who launched her campaign in January, emphasized her experience in immigration enforcement during the Trump administration, stating she would not stop until American families felt safe.

However, public sentiment towards ICE has shifted recently, with critics highlighting controversies surrounding enforcement operations and rising political tensions related to immigration. During a Republican debate, candidate Alea Nadeem noted that ICE has become politically damaging for the Republican Party.

Sheahan's campaign drew attention to her past roles, including work with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and her connections to former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who later joined ICE leadership.
