Uche Nwosu Calls for Modernization of Igbo Apprenticeship

Uche Nwosu, a former governorship candidate in Imo State and Chief of Staff to former Governor Rochas Okorocha, called for a comprehensive overhaul of the traditional Igbo apprenticeship system during the 2026 Igbo National Convention organized by Igbo Union Canada in Abuja. He described the apprenticeship model as a significant expression of Igbo enterprise but stressed the need for it to evolve to meet modern economic demands.

Nwosu highlighted the historical significance of the system in rebuilding the Igbo economy post-Nigerian Civil War, transforming youth into various trades. However, he acknowledged shortcomings, including unfulfilled agreements, exploitation, and the exclusion of women.

He proposed reforms such as written agreements, structured learning plans, transparent settlement arrangements, and improved inclusion of women to ensure the system equips apprentices with necessary skills for the global economy.
