Concerns Raised Over 2026 Electoral Act's Impact on 2027 Elections

Mike Igini, a former Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), raised significant concerns about the 2026 Electoral Act during an appearance on Arise TV's morning show. He identified three dangerous provisions within the Act that he believes could undermine the credibility of future elections, including the 2027 elections.

Igini specifically pointed to Section 60(3), which allegedly allows the presidential office to accept ballot papers that do not bear INEC's official mark, raising fears of unauthorized ballot production. He also criticized Section 138, which he argued could shield electoral officers from accountability for misconduct, and Section 137, which he claimed removes the requirement for individuals to join electoral petitions, potentially complicating the challenge of electoral results.

Igini expressed disappointment over these provisions, stating they could lead to significant risks for electoral integrity and the overall democratic process in Nigeria.
