Ex-NEXIM MD Robert Orya Sentenced to 490 Years for N2.4bn Fraud in Nigeria

Robert Orya, the former Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), has been convicted and sentenced to 490 years in prison by the EFCC for a N2.4 billion fraud case. Orya was found guilty on 49 counts of fraudulent diversion of funds belonging to the bank during his tenure from 2011 to 2016.

The judgment was delivered by Justice F. E.

Messiri at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja. The EFCC, under the leadership of Chairman Ola Olukoyede, has intensified its prosecution of high-profile corruption cases, emphasizing no individual will be shielded from accountability.

Orya's conviction underscores the EFCC's commitment to combating economic crimes within Nigeria's financial sector. The case highlighted irregularities in loan disbursements and financial misconduct at NEXIM Bank, leading to Orya's lengthy prison sentence.
