Former Zambian Minister Kafwaya Killed in Police Raid

Mutotwe Kafwaya, a former Zambian minister, was killed during a police raid on a property associated with opposition leader Brian Mundubile in Lusaka on August 13, 2021, a day after Zambia's presidential election. The Zambian Police confirmed that Kafwaya was fatally wounded during an exchange of gunfire between law enforcement and unknown individuals.

The raid, conducted by a joint security task force, led to the arrest of 11 people and the recovery of weapons. Authorities accused Mundubile's political alliance of involvement in insurgency and militia activities.

Mundubile, who received about 38% of the vote in the presidential election won by Hakainde Hichilema with approximately 60%, has denied the allegations and plans to challenge the election results in court. The United Nations human rights chief expressed concern over the arrests made during the raid, while the European Union raised issues regarding the electoral process, including vote-counting irregularities and a heavy military presence.
