Zambia Courts Sealed as Election Result Challenge Deadline Nears

On the final day for filing legal petitions against the presidential election results in Zambia, court buildings, including the High Court and Supreme Court in Lusaka, were sealed off. Armed individuals reportedly turned away lawyers attempting to enter.

Opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, who received 38% of the vote in the August 13 election, announced plans to contest the results, alleging irregularities. The incumbent president won re-election with 60% of the vote.

Following threats against him, Mundubile has gone into hiding, claiming protection from an international human rights body. The situation escalated after security forces raided a location in Lusaka, resulting in the death of former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya, which rights groups condemned, calling for an independent investigation.

Despite the legal uncertainties, preparations for the inauguration of the incumbent president are ongoing, scheduled for September 1 at the National Stadium. International observers noted concerns regarding the election process, including military presence and lack of transparency in vote counting.
