Zambia Detains Opposition Leaders Amid Election Tensions

Zambia's security forces detained several opposition leaders, including Patrick Mwansa, husband of Tasila Lungu, and Brian Mundubile, the leading opposition candidate in the recent presidential election. The arrests were linked to alleged military plans involving foreign nationals and illegal military training camps, which were described as a serious threat to state security.

During a raid in Lusaka, security forces recovered high-grade military weapons and ammunition, and shots were exchanged with law enforcement. Mundubile, who is trailing incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema in election results, claimed victory and alleged irregularities, including military involvement at tallying centers.

Authorities rejected these claims, stating that preliminary observer reports indicated the election was largely peaceful. The suspects are being held at various police stations in Lusaka, and security has been heightened in the capital.

Mundubile reported being interrogated and assaulted by army officers, which authorities denied. The Zambia electoral commission briefly suspended the counting of results due to violence against polling staff.
