Local Processing of Pineapples Urged to Boost Economy

Segun Alabi, a pineapple expert and founder of DavidOrlah Nigeria Limited, addressed journalists in Abuja on Thursday, advocating for local processing of pineapples to enhance their value and contribute to Nigeria's economy. He lamented the trend of exporting pineapples in their raw form, which he stated diminishes potential economic gains.

Alabi highlighted that a single pineapple sold raw in the international market fetches between $3 to $5 (approximately N3,000 to N5,000), while processed products such as juice, concentrate, and dried fruit can generate five to ten times that value. He urged the government to implement policies that support agro-processing infrastructure and facilitate access to financial support for companies like DavidOrlah, which he described as an indigenous fruit company.

Alabi's call emphasizes the importance of transforming the agricultural sector to maximize economic benefits.
