Experts Urge Stricter Building Standards After Collapses

Two buildings collapsed in Osisioma Local Government Area, Abia State, with the incidents occurring on New Jerusalem Road and 8 Ez Ihem Road. Fortunately, no lives were lost in either collapse.

The Nigerian Institute of Building, represented by Wisdom Okor, the chairman of the practice committee, emphasized the need for stronger measures to prevent structural failures. Okor described the recurring incidents of building collapses across the country as a serious concern that requires coordinated action from government regulatory agencies and professionals in the construction industry.

He urged the Abia State government to strengthen the implementation of the National Building Code and to develop physical planning regulations. Chinedu Nwanosik, chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Building Abia State chapter, called for professionals in the building industry to uphold ethical standards and comply with approved construction procedures.
