Anambra Government Demolishes Unsafe Building in Umuoji

The Anambra State Government, led by Barr Chijiok Ojukwu, has taken decisive action by demolishing a three-storey building in Umuoji, Idemili North LGA, that collapsed on May 18. This demolition is part of a broader initiative to strengthen compliance with building regulations aimed at protecting lives and properties.

The structural failure was attributed to the use of substandard materials and poor construction practices, including inadequate curing of blocks and unsuitable reinforcement materials. Barr Ojukwu stated that the project violated several building regulations, including the absence of an approved permit and non-compliance with setback requirements.

The government aims to prevent future disasters rather than punish developers, emphasizing the importance of adhering to established building standards. Additionally, the Anambra State Government plans to intensify monitoring and enforcement across the state and is considering stricter sanctions for developers who fail to meet approved standards, including potential criminal penalties.
