Experts Call for Action Against HPV in Nigeria

On Wednesday, experts in Abuja called for stronger research, free nationwide screenings, and community mobilization to address human papillomavirus (HPV) in Nigeria. This initiative coincides with the 2026 International HPV Awareness Day, led by the International Papillomavirus Society, which aims to highlight the dangers of HPV beyond cervical cancer.

Professor Imran Oludar from Morhason Bello University College Hospital warned against limiting HPV discussions solely to cervical cancer, as HPV can also cause throat, mouth, and penile cancers. He urged policymakers to adopt a transdisciplinary approach that integrates medical science, social research, and community leadership.

Despite Nigeria's progress in vaccinating 16 million girls against HPV, there are still ten million eligible girls unvaccinated. Dr. Maureen Umeakuewulu emphasized the need for a nationwide advocacy movement to counter misinformation about vaccines causing infertility.

Professor Moham Manga highlighted the importance of media and community leaders in the fight against HPV, stressing that eliminating HPV requires collective responsibility and sustained funding.
