Gombe State Launches HPV Vaccination Drive Against Cancer

Gombe State is rallying against cervical cancer as the Arewa Cancer Control Coalition, in partnership with health authorities, launches a large-scale awareness campaign promoting the HPV vaccine. The initiative aims to educate the public, particularly young girls and their parents, about the life-saving benefits of early vaccination and routine screening.

Professor Muhammad Manga, President of the International Papillomavirus Society Nigeria, commended the federal government for enhancing access to vaccination and cancer care services. He highlighted ongoing efforts led by Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, Coordinator of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, to expand free diagnosis and treatment initiatives.

The campaign targets girls aged 9 to 14, with a goal of achieving at least 90 percent coverage among eligible girls to meet global targets set by the World Health Organization for cervical cancer elimination. Dr.

Musa Mustapha, Director of Disease Control and Immunization at Gombe State Primary Health Care Development Agency, emphasized the importance of regular screening alongside vaccination.
