Experts Urge Increased HPV Vaccination Awareness in Nigeria

Health experts, including Dr. Emmanuel Egbroko, Chief Executive Officer of Inocul8, and Dr.

Paul Ogboji, Chief Medical Director of Inocul8, advocate for improved awareness of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in Nigeria. HPV, a common sexually transmitted infection, has over 150 related types, with 40 affecting the genital area.

While some types are harmless, others can lead to genital warts and various forms of cancer. The experts note that HPV is primarily transmitted through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex, and can be passed even when symptoms are not visible.

They highlight the psychological impact of HPV, including embarrassment and anxiety, and the challenges of early detection due to its silent nature. Treatment options for genital warts include topical creams and minor surgical procedures, but these do not eliminate the virus completely.

The experts call for prioritizing health education, regular medical check-ups, and the adoption of safer sexual practices to combat HPV in Nigeria.
