Experts Endorse Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Planning

Experts have endorsed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, advocating for inclusive planning to improve national connectivity, strengthen regional development, and support logistics while promoting tourism and reducing spatial isolation. The discussions took place during an event organized by the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Lagos State Chapter, in conjunction with the Association of Town Planning Consultants Nigeria.

Guest speaker Prof. Peter Elia, a professor of geography and co-director of the Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development at the University of Lagos, highlighted the highway's potential benefits and associated risks, particularly concerning environmental degradation and social injustice.

He noted that the coastal zone is already under stress due to urban expansion and climate risks. The event also featured the 2026 Femi Olomola Lecture, with Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal Abisogun Oniru discussing the importance of balancing infrastructure development with environmental protection and socio-economic inclusivity.
