Lagos Stakeholders Demand Probe into Coastal Highway Flooding

Real estate stakeholders, including Stella Okengwu, Chairman of Gtext Holdings, and Stephen Akintayo, CEO of Winhom Limit, are advocating for an independent investigation into the alignment of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway. They argue that the design may have worsened recent flooding in Lagos State.

During a television program, Okengwu commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Tokunbo Wahab for their efforts to mitigate flooding but insisted that experts should examine whether changes made since the original 2006 gazette alignment have contributed to the current situation. They raised concerns about the environmental impact assessments conducted prior to the highway's construction.

Akintayo noted that the highway's elevation could hinder natural drainage, exacerbating flooding issues. Both stakeholders are calling for the establishment of an independent compensation fund to address losses incurred due to the highway project and to restore investor confidence in Lagos' real estate sector.
