EITI Delegation Assesses Nigeria's Extractive Governance

A delegation of assessors from the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) visited Nigeria last week to validate the country's compliance with global standards for managing natural resources. The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) reported that Nigeria received commendations for improved systematic disclosures, enabling real-time information release in the extractive sector.

The delegation engaged with various stakeholders, including Senator George Akume, Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning Doris Uzoka-Anite, and NNPC Limited's Group Chief Executive Officer Bayo Ojulari. They also met representatives from host communities in Rivers and Zamfara States.

However, the assessors likely observed the ongoing issues between NNPCL and the Senate regarding accountability for unaccounted funds. The visit underscored that while disclosure is essential, it does not equate to accountability, highlighting the legislature's challenges in effectively overseeing NNPCL's operations.
