Governors Under Scrutiny Over N47tn FAAC Disbursement

The 36 state governors of Nigeria are facing increasing pressure to account for the spending of approximately N47 trillion disbursed by the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) over the last three years, following the removal of the petrol subsidy. This scrutiny arises from a report indicating that between 2017 and 2025, the Federal Government, states, and local governments shared a total of N93.216 trillion, with over half of this amount distributed in the three years post-economic reforms initiated by the Federal Government in 2023.

The report from the Federal Ministry of Finance reveals that N47.25 trillion, or about 50.7% of the total shared, was allocated from 2023 to 2025. Despite the surge in revenue, policy analysts and civil society groups, including Adebayo Abubakar, argue that the increase has not led to significant improvements in public services or living conditions for Nigerians, who continue to face high living costs, unemployment, and inadequate infrastructure.
