Five States Collect N317.5bn, Exceeding 20 Others

In May 2026, the five states with the highest allocations from the Federation Account collectively received N317.47 billion, exceeding the combined N310.13 billion allocated to 20 states with the lowest distributions. The states that benefited the most were Rivers (N70.32 billion), Delta (N66.44 billion), Akwa Ibom (N62.09 billion), Lagos (N60.35 billion), and Bayelsa (N58.28 billion).

In contrast, the 20 states with the lowest allocations included Ekiti (N13.13 billion), Cross River (N13.21 billion), and others, with the lowest five states receiving only N68.65 billion combined. The disparity in allocations was largely influenced by the 13 percent derivation revenue for oil-producing states and the Value Added Tax (VAT) component.

For instance, Delta received N50.25 billion in derivation revenue, while Lagos, despite not receiving derivation, ranked fourth due to a substantial VAT allocation of N55.25 billion after deductions.
